• Jheel Sanrakshan Samiti: Protecting the Lifelines of Udaipur

At the forefront of the protection is Jheel Sanrakshan Samiti (JSS), a community-led initiative founded and led by Dr. Mahendra Singh Shaktawat. For over a decade, JSS has organised lake conservation Udaipur drives, fought against illegal encroachments, and have worked closely with civic authorities to draft policies that prioritise sustainable lake management.

Dr. Shaktawat believes the lakes are not just water bodies but a symbol of Udaipur’s identity. If we lose our lakes, we lose Udaipur, he often says. His team works year-round to engage locals, youth groups, and educational institutions in their preservation efforts.

• Pukaar Foundation: Growing Forests in the Heart of the City

Amid rising temperatures and depleting green cover, urban afforestation Rajasthan is no longer a choice, it's a necessity. Enter Pukaar Foundation, a youth-led NGO that has brought thousands of native trees back to the city using the Japanese Miyawaki plantation technique.

Founded by Manvendra Singh Shekhawat, Pukaar began as a small weekend project in 2013 and has now transformed into one of Udaipur’s most impactful Udaipur green movement initiatives. Volunteers ranging from college students to professionals join hands every weekend to turn barren patches into thriving urban forests.

Their aim is simple, they  want to create breathing spaces for the next generation, small dense forests that clean our air, support biodiversity, and inspire community ownership.  The NGO’s most successful projects include the transformation of neglected municipal lands into thriving green zones across the city.

• WSARS: Bridging the Gap Between Wildlife and Urban Life

Environmental work in Udaipur isn’t limited to trees and lakes. The Wild and Street Animal Rescue Society (WSARS), led by veterinarian Dr. Rajeev Bhatt, has broadened the scope to include animal welfare and wildlife rescue Udaipu, key components in maintaining ecological balance.

From rescuing injured birds during kite festivals to rehabilitating snakes, leopards, and other wild animals that stray into urban areas, WSARS is often the first responder in animal emergencies. But their work doesn’t stop there. Through educational programs in schools and villages, WSARS raises awareness about human-animal coexistence and the vital role each species plays in our ecosystem.

Dr. Bhatt’s approach is holistic An environment isn’t just trees or air or water. It’s every creature that inhabits it. To protect one, we must understand and protect all.

• Seva Mandir: Reviving Rural Ecosystems Across Southern Rajasthan

While Udaipur city gains attention for its visible environmental efforts, it is the rural hinterlands that carry the legacy of long-term change. Seva Mandir, an NGO with a decades-long presence in the region, continues its work in watershed management, reforestation, and sustainable rural development.

Under the leadership of Ronak Shah, Seva Mandir collaborates with tribal and farming communities to restore degraded hills, build check dams, and revive dying water streams. Their projects have directly impacted over 600 villages across southern Rajasthan.

Environmental change is not a one-day event, It takes years of trust-building, consistency, and community involvement.Their patient, grassroots approach has not only revived ecosystems but also improved livelihoods, proving that sustainability and development can go hand-in-hand.
