Amar SIngh Rao
“Each day is a new opportunity to improve yourself, take it, & make the most of it”. Amar Singh Rao is a successful Pharmacist, Owner of Dhruv Medicals and also Hotel Heritage Haveli, Udaipur. Born in Kanawada, Rajsamand, Rao did his schooling from Jawar Mines, where his father worked as a laborer at Hindustan Zinc. He was a good student who bagged no less than 1st division each time. But, due to his grandfather’s sad demise, he scored a bit less in 10th standard. As a result of which he was forced by his dad who worked with Engineers to go for the same but he was oriented towards the medical field.
He did his Diploma in Pharmacy from Banswara and completed his BPharma course from Sri Balaji College, Jaipur. During his stay in Zawar Mines with his dad, he was forced to learn cooking on seeing the situation. Most of the time his dad left early for work without even preparing breakfast. He was left with no choice rather than to have bread & milk or to cook for himself and his dad. Later on, his mother did come over there, but till then, he knew how to cook. He even prepared lunch for the family and a lunch box for him. Now if we say, many times he willingly cooks at his place, and now cooking is no more a burden but a learned hobby. Amar believes that caste reservation is a curse for the General category. He mentioned that after completing his education, he did give the Patwari exam for a better job and livelihood. He prepared well but was unsuccessful by just 3 marks, and the person much behind him with scores got selected. From that very day, he was against Reservation and decided to opt for a business. He even left the placement offer by Ranbaxy, paying him 6k/month.
He then came to Udaipur for a better living and, with the help of a friend, applied at Sun Pharmaceutical Company and got placed at Rs 25k/month as a marketing employee. He worked there for 2.5 years, but due to the never-ending pressure of completing targets, he left the job, and with his savings, he shifted onto a taxi business and bought 3 taxis. Taxi business started giving him good returns, but after six months, the drivers betrayed him, and he had to wind up the business. Then, due to marital responsibilities and family disconnection, he applied for a job and got one as a fresher at Torrent pharma. There he worked for 7 years. With that, he even did some Real estate business side by side. He then left the job and invested his savings of 15 Lakhs in Hotel Heritage Haveli.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, his hotel business stopped all of a sudden. He then shifted to the work he was actually meant to do. He now owns a pharmacy store and is much content and satisfied with this work as this work displayed the true colors of his education. Rao strongly believes that one should choose a profession by at least giving proper thought to it. Our interest and knowledge are what we should follow and pursue in life accordingly. Also, he says that ‘life is all about risks because it always seems impossible until it’s done’.
